Little Mirchi’s First Holi

lmholi2

I’m just going to warn you now… picture heavy post ahead! In total I have about 50-60 pictures from our at home “Holi Painting Party” but I spared you the downloading time and only posted my favorites.

lmholi6

LMHoli1

Making homemade edible finger paints and having Little Mirchi play with them to celebrate her first Holi turned out better than expected. If Motherhood teaches you one thing, it’s to be ready for the unexpected. I was pretty sure that she might roll around in the paint, try and crawl off the “canvas” I made for her or worse, hate the painting period. But none of that happened, in fact once Hubby Darling joined her, she loved touching and feeling the paints.

lmholi3

lmholi7

lmholi5

I’m pretty sure we are going to make this a tradition going forward; it was all the fun and color of Holi but none of the mess! All of the paints washed off our clothes and skin easily, with no staining.

lmholi4

Wishing you and yours a colorful & festive Holi!

A whole new world
Recently I purchased a pair of prescription sunglasses and oh em gee. Where have I been?! I’m obsessed… I love the fact that I don’t have to wear contacts just so I can wear sunglasses. I feel like I’ve been living in a cave this whole time and everyone who wears glasses (or contacts) has them. Well worth the purchase.

[ t w o ]

Obsessed
I’ve got Bikram Singh’s, Gunjan’s and Tigerstyles latest collaboration,  ’Kawan ll’ on repeat for the past week. Anyone that knows me well knows that I was slightest seriously obsessed with the original ‘Kawan’. I’m loving the fresh take on the new version.

Hang on baby
So I’m in the market for a new baby carrier. Currently we have the Baby Bjorn but now that Little Mirchi is older (and heavier) I feel as if she’s outgrown it and we need something with more support. There are SO many choices out there for newborns but not so much for older babies. I’m looking for the following in our future carrier (oh and I’m open to carriers, wraps, slings):

  • Must be able to support older babies (LM will be one in a few weeks so I want something that will last us beyond a few months)
  • Must be made of a breathable fabric, something that will not have her sweating up a storm in Summer.
  • Must give her & me support: I must have something that she is comfortable in that also doesn’t strain my back!

Any suggestions? I would love your thoughts if you’ve used a carrier/sling/wrap for an older baby.

Gajar & Pata Gobi Sabzi {Spiced Carrot & Cabbage Stir Fry}

“Spring shows what God can do with a drab and dirty world.”  ― Virgil Kraft

gajarpatagobi

Well that was a cruel joke, Mother Nature. 75 degree’s one weekend and snow the very next day?! I thought spring was finally on it’s way. The winter months leave me tired of the same old fruits and vegetables and being snowed in almost every week. <Insert: we are not winter hash tag!> Along with the dreary weather winter drags in, it also leaves us craving carbs and more carbs. Spring to me feels like an invitation for tropical fruits, fresh vegetables, and more color everywhere – including our plates. Like most moms/wives I am always on a mission to incorporate more vegetables during mealtime. Traditionally in most South Asian family homes there is always a sabzi with lunch and/or dinner. Sabzi is the general term used for a vegetable side dish, may it be a stand-alone vegetable dish or a mix of vegetables. I am a huge fan of sabzi’s but Hubby Darling… not so much. He has his favorites like spinach, peas, carrots and every guy’s favorite – potatoes (which I don’t even consider a vegetable!) but getting him to try a new sabzi is near close to impossible.

Recently I tried a mixed sabzi of cabbage and carrots, which he actually ate (and liked). I don’t cook much with cabbage, so when I find a good recipe that calls for it; it gets saved in my favorites. What I love about this recipe is that it’s a no fuss, simple ingredient dish that can be prepared in under half an hour. The bite sized pieces are also great for children as young as toddler’s who are experimenting with finger foods. Since the spice in the dish is added from fresh green chilies, parents can easily remove those bits to ensure no whole chilies are being consumed.

cabcar2

Cabbage is often called a super food. With it’s low in sugar and fat but high in vitamin and mineral properties it’s a great addition to any meal and is available year round.  Listed below are some of the biggest health benefits of cabbage:

  •  Boots Immunity

Because of it’s high Vitamin C content cabbage helps strengthen one’s immunity system and aids in curbing free radicals.

  • Aids in digestion

Cabbage is high in fiber and provides relief from bloating and/or constipation.

  • Good for skin

Cabbage is rich in antioxidants, which protect skin and reduce the sign of aging.

  • Relief from sore muscles

Sore muscles are relived from the amount of lactic acid that is present in cabbage.

With these benefits and more it’s hard not wanting to add cabbage during mealtime.  What are some way’s you include vegetables during mealtime?  How does your family respond to trying new vegetables?

cabcar4

Ingredients:

4 cups coarsely chopped cabbage (about ½ head of cabbage)

2 medium carrots (chopped about 2 inches long and ½ inch thick)

2 green chilies (cut in 2 in strips)

6-7 kadi pata (curry leaves)

3 teaspoons jeera (cumin)

½ teaspoon rai (black mustard seed)

½ teaspoon hing (asafoetida)

2 teaspoons salt – adjust to taste

½ teaspoon haldi (turmeric powder)

3 tablespoons chopped dhaniya (cilantro)

3 tablespoons cooking oil

cabcar3

Method:

In a heavy bottom skillet, heat oil on medium heat. Add kadi pata, two teaspoons jeera, rai and hing. Once spices start sputtering in add remaining jeera, green chilies and carrots. Mix and cook for 3-4 minutes. Add cabbage, salt and haldi. Stir ingredients together. Reduce heat to medium low and cover skillet letting simmer for 10-12 minutes (mixing occasionally.) Uncover, add dhaniya and let cook for an additional 5-7 minutes. Serve hot with roti or rice.

Enjoy!

Gold Flatware

Obsessed. I am absolutely loving the trend of gold flatware of late – not to be confused with  grandma’s bulky, shiny gold flatware. My favorite collection so far is from the dress designer maven her self, Diane von Furtenberg. The matte gold combined with the slim lines and elegant sizing… it would add a little sexy to any dinner party. goldflatware

Craigslist for Moms

Recently while shopping for carriers and searching for Mom reviews I stumbled upon a website called ‘Trading Cradles‘. It’s basically an online marketplace for parents to buy and sell baby and maternity items. GENIUS. How could I not share this with my fellow Moms?! After having a Little Mirchi we are always trying to find ways to get rid of things she has grown out of/gotten too old for and I love that this is a baby only place and won’t get lost in a sea of random ads.

Cute kids are all over Instagram, but I recently started following a Mom who takes pictures of her adorable son and their rescue dog in matching ensembles. I can’t handle the cuteness and am always looking forward to the next look! You can find the adorable duo via #zoeyandjasper on Instagram.

Having cake and eating it too.

I have always loved the idea of first birthday cake smashes and wanted Little Mirchi to have one too. We knew her actual birthday weekend would be too busy, so the weekend before worked perfectly. A day before the smash session I ordered a small fresh cream cake and set up some disposable table cloths in our living room the night before. I didn’t want to worry about any small details the day of and just wanted to focus on her & taking pictures. To our delight when we awoke the next morning it was a beautiful warm spring day. We ditched the indoor idea and headed straight for the park. It worked out perfectly since she absolutely loves being outdoors. It was her first time trying any type of frosting on cake so I was a bit hesitant, but she dove right in like a champ. Here are some of my favorites from Little Mirchi’s first birthday cake smash session:

It's my 1st birthday!

Ever since 9th & Elm contacted me about an opportunity to review their products I’ve been eager to share them! 9th & Elm is a boutique website that specializes in handmade and independent designers. There is everything from apparel to jewelry and more!

There’s something so intimate about engraved jewelry pieces. I’ve always loved engraved and personalized pieces as they just feel a part of you and your collection right from the beginning. They take you to the time when that “date” was in the moment, or that feeling was fresh in your heart.

These are some of the personalized pieces that have made their way into my collection recently courtesy 9th & Elm.

My hand stamped silver cuff  that houses one of my all time favorite quotes by poet Rumi… “Close your eyes. Fall in love. Stay there.” The simplicity of the slim silver silhouette and basic font is wonderful for everyday wear.

My math band ring is another sweet but simple addition that was too adorable to pass up. It’s etched with my husband and my initials with a dainty little heart to sum up the equation. See what I did there ;)

Celebrating Raksha Bandhan

“Siblings are the people we practice on, the people who teach us about fairness and cooperation and kindness and caring, quite often the hard way.” -Pamela Dugdale

IMG_147811

When I saw this quote all I could think about was how much “practicing” my brother and I did on each other growing up. He was the first to try my cooking, my first best friend, my first ‘kid’ in many ways. I remember the first year my brother and I didn’t get to celebrate Raksha Bandhan together, I was devastated! I’m thrilled that this year we’ll be celebrating the festival together. Raksha Bandhan (also known as Rakhi/Rakhri) is the Hindu festival that celebrates the love and loyalty between brother and sister. On this day sisters tie a rakhi (blessed thread) on their brother’s wrist. This thread symbolizes the sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well-being, and the brother’s promise to protect her. After the rakhi is tied, sweets are exchanged and the brother gifts their sister a token, as a thank you for their prayers and blessings.

This year Raksha Bandhan falls on Sunday, August 10th.

amarnisha1

One of my favorite childhood pictures of my brother & I

There are stories in Indian history going back to the Rajput Queens and how they would send rakhis to neighboring kingdoms, as peace offerings & binding the kings in brotherhood. In India and Indian markets around the world, weeks leading up to the festival stores are filled with an assortment of rakhis, sweets and gifts.

IMG_1627

Last year I chose Little Mirchi’s rakhis for her cousin brothers (after all she was only 3 months old!) This year we took Little Mirchi to the local Indian market and let her choose the rakhis herself. (Mostly it was her trying to grab all the hanging rakhis out of excitement, but a fun experience none the less.)

Although she’s not old enough to make any handmade ones as of yet, I thought these DIY Rakhi crafts were too cute not to share.

Happy Thursday All! Hope you are having a great summer so far. Can you believe it’s already mid August? I just don’t understand how fast the time is flying by. This week I’m sharing something very special to my heart, my parent’s home… my Florida home. Our formal living room is one of my favorite places at home. My mom has adorned it with special pieces from our travels to India and it’s a sweet reminder of the beauty in India. Whenever I sit there I feel like royalty. Here are three things in the room that I absolutely love!

Krishna Janmashtami

Two years ago on Krishna Janmashtami while flipping through devotional songs on You Tube I stumbled upon this video. I remember a flow of emotions sweeping over me and leaving me yearning for something. I had never felt this feeling before, a hollow type feeling wanting almost needing ‘it’ to happen immediately. I placed my hand on my stomach and made a wish, “Please Babaji (god) make me a mother”. One month later Little Mirchi was conceived. I will never forget that day. It was almost as if my inner core was saying, “I’m ready for motherhood”.

Krishna Janmashtami is the annual festival celebrating the birth of the Hindu deity Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. This year Krishna Janmashtami will be on Sunday, August 17th. There are thousands of colorful tales sharing the naughtiness and sweetness of Bal (Baby) Krishna. Storybooks are filled with tales of his love for butter and yogurt and how he & his friends would sneak into neighboring homes and devour all their dairy. Many have written of how his mother Yashoda would have to hear a long list of complaints of her naughty little one. One thing however that everyone agrees upon in anything penned or pictured is the love between mother and child.

Picture9

A popular depiction of Mother Yashoda and Baby Krishna

On the day of the celebration babies and toddlers are dressed up as Bal Krishna. Competitions are held where teams of young men form human towers to reach high-hanging pots of butter to break just as Krishna and his friends would do. Many stay up fasting until the wee hours of early morning when he was born.

IMG_1979

We have a tradition in our family of dressing up all the babies as Krishna at least once. My Nanima (maternal grandmother) would take out her pearls and saris to dress us cousins up as the naughty butter thief when we were young. Keeping with tradition, Little Mirchi’s Nanima (my mom ;)) dressed her up this year. We decided to do it a few days early as we would be busy in the Mandir (temple) the day of. My mom was so excited that just as her mom dressed up her baby she did the same for my baby. And as if life wasn’t full circle enough, that same song that had me yearning for a child is now my darling’s favorite song. Funny how life works huh?!

Celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with Kids

Lord Ganesha, the Hindu god is characterized by numerous attributes, his elephant head being the most noticeable. Known as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences, he is also the deva of intellect and wisdom. Ganesha is also invoked as the advocate of learning. Traditionally, prior to school starting children pray to Lord Ganesh for any obstacles to be removed. As the god of beginnings, he is also honored at the start of every religious ritual and ceremony.

Ganesh Chaturthi is the festival that honors Lord Ganesha. A ten day festival is held where clay sculptures of the god are installed in temples and homes. On the last day there are grand celebrations, street parties and feasts as the idols are taken to sea to be immersed in water.

Due to his elephant head many kids are attracted to the plump, sweet loving god. My husband tells me stories about when he was a child and how he would go sit at the clay makers shop next door to his house. The clay maker would let him help mold the ears and other simple parts. As evening struck my husband would plead and beg his mom to take home one of the Ganesh Idols. Even to this day my in laws always remember my husbands childhood antics surrounding the festival.

Celebrating these festivals with young kids doesn’t always have to be an elaborate affair. You can do arts, crafts and other simple activities to involve them. Here are some fun ideas to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with your little ones.

Chicken Chapli Kebabs

“People who love to eat are always the best people.” – Julia Child

chaplikebab_6

This recipe is dedicated to our friend S, whose love for chicken is contagious. Kid you not, she is the queen of chicken. Breakfast, lunch and dinner her meal isn’t complete without her favorite protein. A few weeks ago after our girls had gotten out of swim class we were talking about our lunch plans, weekend plans. My husband mentioned he wanted me to make him his Mom’s Upma (a spicy semolina porridge). S’s husband mentioned how they had a ritual of going to this local Turkish place after class because it was quick, fresh and easy. And that’s when it happened. S started gushing about the tender kebabs, how juicy and flavorful they were and how they just melted in your mouth. This was not the first time she was putting water in our mouths. S’s love of chicken is so deep that she will describe it in such a way that it will leave you craving it. In fact, my first choice is generally a vegetarian dish but when I’m around S, I suddenly find myself wanting chicken… crazy, I know!

chaplikebab_2
A few days later I found myself craving kebabs so I made these Chapli Kebabs. Chapli Kebabs are made with ground meat and fresh herbs and spices. They are prepared flat and round and generally served with naan. The word Chapli comes from the Pashto word Chaprikh, which means “flat”. These kebabs are great to make ahead of time and freeze wonderfully. And don’t let the long list of ingredients scare you off, the more herbs and spices you add the more flavorful they will be! The recipe is pretty forgiving as well, for example, I only had two small green chilies as opposed to the 3 the recipe calls for, so I threw in a red Thai chili I had. I used chicken as the base but you could make these with any lean ground meat.

chaplikebab_4
Oh and you can bet that we took a detour that day going home and got kebabs after swim class!

Ingredients

3 lbs of ground chicken
1 medium red onion
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
1/2 teaspoon coarse black pepper
2 teaspoon coriander powder
2 teaspoon crushed fresh garlic
2 teaspoon ground cumin powder
2 teaspoons shahi jeera (black cumin)
1 teaspoon white poppy seeds
1 tablespoon dried mint
3 medium sized green chilies
1/3 cup fresh cilantro
1/3 cup fresh flat leaf parsley
2 limes (juice of one lime for mixture/one for garnishing)
3 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
1/3 cup cooking oil

chaplikebab_1

chaplikebab_3

Method
In a food processed chop all herbs and spices together. It’s important to taste for salt during this step. Once the mixture is finely chopped add to large bowl and mix in ground meat. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30-45 minutes. This will prevent the meat from sticking to your fingers while making the kebabs.

Once chilled, take heaping tablespoon of meat mixture in your hand. Place it in center of palm. Roll it to form a smooth ball (around the size of a gold ball) and then flatten the ball by pressing firmly between your palms. Place on parchment paper and continue until all kebabs have been formed.

In a heavy bottom pan heat oil on medium high heat. Once oil gets hot lower heat to medium low and fry kababs for 4-5 minutes or until well done on each side.

chaplikebab_5

Squeeze fresh lime juice on hot kebabs and garnish with fresh cilantro and onions.

Enjoy

Celebrating Karva Chauth

celebrating karvachauth

Karva Chauth is almost here and I can’t wait! Karva Chauth is a North Indian festival celebrated around the world in which married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the health and long lives of their husbands. You’re probably thinking what could be so exciting about fasting? But that’s just it, the day is spent in adorning yourself like a bride, the full deal from clothing, jewelry to applying mendhi (henna). In addition, housework is restricted and you are so busy in preparations for the chaand puja (moon prayer) that you hardly notice the fasting. Traditionally mother in laws prepare saargi, the pre-sunrise early morning meals for their daughter in laws and fast together. In essence, it’s a celebration of the wife and her promise to always pray and protect her husband.

karvachauth mendhi

Second to Diwali this is the festival I look forward to most. When I was a little girl I would ‘ooooh’ and ‘aaahhh’ as my mom adorned herself the day of. She would take out her crimson color sari, adjust her kamar baand, select something from her jewelry collection and apply sindoor (a red powder, the symbol of a married woman) on her forehead. I would shriek out of excitement of how beautiful she looked. All I could do was hope that I too had the glow of love and femininity like her when it was time for me to celebrate.

My first Karva Chauth as a married woman!

My first Karva Chauth as a married woman!

When it was time for me to celebrate my first married Karva Chauth a few years ago, my mom made sure everything was as beautiful and romantic as I imagined it. She had a mendhi artist come the night before to adorn our hands and feet. A few days leading up to the festival we decorated our plates and accessories needed for the prayer. In the wee early hours of the morning after showering, we sat together in prayer which was immediately followed by a meal of paranthas and jalebis dunked in milk. That evening I took out my wedding trousseau to wear, it felt just as magical as it did the first time. Everything was perfect, even better than I had imagined.

Karva Chauth through out the years

Karva Chauth through out the years

The romance, colors, significance and traditions have me counting down as the festival approaches each year. This year a group of girlfriends and I are having a mendhi celebration the day before – to get us in the spirit and start the adorning early! I love celebrating traditional holidays even more now that Little Mirchi is growing up. I hope that she too will be as enthused as I was watching my mom celebrate.

Wishing all the beautiful ladies celebrating a Happy Karva Chauth!

30 Children’s Books on Indian Culture & Festivals

Having to raise my brother and I outside of India my parents had to make extra efforts to teach us about our culture, language and religion. When you live in India, you just know when the festive season is around the corner, shops start putting out their finest pieces, it’s blasted across televisions and street signs, families start hosting big dinners and mothers get busy in the kitchen. Due to the zero commercial influence in the States, my parents would have to make up for it at home by making it a big deal. They would tell us colorful stories from their childhood, cook our favorite foods, and get us involved in fun and festive help tasks. My dad had a shelf in his library dedicated to Indian books and comics, just so he could teach us the culture in a ‘fun’ way. Years later I still find myself indulging in those books every time I go home to visit my parents.

Even before Little Mirchi was born I started a running list of Indian inspired books that I wanted to add to our home library for her to learn and read from. My hope is that she too will learn and hold on to the memories the way I cherish the books my Dad collected for us when we were kids. Sharing some of my favorite books that teach children about Indian culture, festivals and language below. I’ll be adding to this list as I come across more Indian inspired fun reads. If there are any children’s books in your collection that you think should be on the list, please share in the comments section!

Kala Chana | Spiced Black Chickpeas

DiwaliSong

I’ve been singing this all week at home – driving Hubby Darling crazy. Is it obvious I’m in the Diwali spirit? Anndd that would be my lyrical talent for the year.

kalachana

Kala chana, halwa & poori, without these three things, the festive season in our house is incomplete. The first time I made Kala chana was my first married Diwali. I was fasting and wanted to prepare a perfect Diwali thali (Diwali plate) just like my Mom did while we were growing up. I asked her for the recipe over the phone and set forth making the dishes one by one. As I started to make the dish I followed the recipe step by step, checking every ingredient off the list. After Diwali puja (prayer) my husband and I sat down to eat. I was so excited for him to try the kala chana (it’s one of his favorites). He gave it a taste and did all he could not to spit it out. In all the jumble of cooking so many dishes I had notated the recipe wrong and double the salt! They tasted terrible to put it gently, but we had a good laugh at my fumble. You can bet the next time I made this dish was on a non fasting day, so I could taste as cooked.

This recipe is a fasting version (meaning onions, garlic are omitted) but it’s full of flavor and tastes great any time of year. If you are looking for a “wetter” version with more gravy you can sauté 1/3 cup chopped onions and tomatoes as step one in the recipe. Black chickpeas are high in protein and fiber and are considered a ‘super food’. Growing up if we made a fuss about eating then my dad would reply “It’s horse’s food, it will make you strong!” After getting married I remember my husband mentioning how it was horse’s food, all I could do was smirk at the coincidence. Black chickpeas are very dense so soaking them overnight is not only suggested it’s almost necessary to ensure quicker cooking time.

Kala chana are a great finger food for kids if they are at the chewing stage. You can add them in chaat, salads; have them with roti or just on their own. My favorite thing to do is roll them in a hot poori with some halwa… a sweet and spicy poori roll – yum!

Ingredients:

1 cup Kala chana (Black Chick Peas)- soaked overnight
2 teaspoon finely crushed ginger
1 1/2 teaspoon jeera (cumin)
1/2  teaspoon Red chili powder
1 teaspoon roasted jeera powder
1 1/2 teaspoon kala namak (black salt)
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
fresh cilantro for garnish

Method:

Wash the soaked chick peas and pressure cook them for 3-4 whistles (or until soft). In a heavy bottom pan heat oil and add cumin seeds to it. Once the seeds start sputtering add the drained chick peas. Add the black salt, ginger, red chili powder, jeera powder and mix thoroughly. Keep it on simmer for 10-15 minutes. Turn off heat, add lemon juice and chopped cilantro.

Enjoy!
